Lost My Marbles – A Campaign to Return the Parthenon Sculptures

A campaign to return the Parthenon Sculptures to Greece – currently stored in the British Museum where they ended up after Lord Elgin ‘collected’ them.

As you will know if you have bumped into us (virtually, presumably) over the last couple of months, we have been hard at work on Lost My Marbles a new campaign to restore the Elgin (née Parthenon) Sculptures to where they belong.

The Parthenon is the greatest example of High Classic art and enduring symbol of the first democracy in Ancient Greece. As such there have been protests ever since Elgin forcibly removed them, along with debate in and out of British parliament.

However, with Brexit negotiations coming to a head at the end of this year (and the Greek government putting the Marbles on the table as part of them), plus a general shift in the way we view and talk about our collective history, it feels like now is the right time to finally send them home.

You can see more about our campaign and the cause on ReuniteParthenon.org, also the takeover we had this week as part of Dan Hicks’s #MuseumsUnlocked campaign gives a pretty good summary of the issue:

Then another thread looks at what we’ve been up to more broadly with the campaign…
